Florida homeowner faces fines for driveway issue
A homeowner in Florida has received a $50 daily fine because his driveway extension is considered illegal. John Lawless, a disabled veteran with Stage 3 cancer, has lived in his home for five years without any issues. He bought the house in 2020, and the driveway extension was one of the key features that attracted him and his wife. The trouble began when a neighbor complained about the driveway. This complaint was filed with the local Community Standards board, stating that the extension was made 11 years ago without the necessary approval. Lawless and his wife were not aware that the extension was not allowed when they purchased their home. They believed it was important for their mobility needs. In January, the community board asked them to attend a public hearing regarding the driveway. Despite explaining their situation, the board informed them they had 90 days to restore the driveway to its original design or continue facing fines. Board Chairman John Miller stated that the board only enforces rules, and not making them. Some residents suggested that complaints might come from an anonymous source targeting others. The community board, however, maintains that they must address all complaints, regardless of the source. Lawless and his wife now face the challenge of dealing with the fines and the required renovations.
