Florida man steals ambulance, leads police on chase
A Florida man faces several charges after allegedly stealing an ambulance and leading police on a chaotic chase. Michael J. Esquilin, 43, was reportedly drinking beer and driving recklessly around Tampa while being pursued by the Florida Highway Patrol. The incident occurred on Saturday when Esquilin stole the ambulance. He took off while emergency responders were trying to transfer a patient to the hospital. Police say he ran stop signs, drove into oncoming traffic, and nearly collided with other vehicles during the chase. Authorities finally stopped him at an intersection, where he was found drinking beer. Esquilin has a history of DUI offenses. In court, prosecutors pointed out that he has four prior DUIs and expressed concern over his blatant disregard for authority. His defense claimed he could not afford bail due to unemployment and financial issues, stating he has lived in the county for 15 years and has family nearby. The judge decided to impose a GPS monitor and an alcohol screening monitor while Esquilin awaits trial. He is being held on a $33,513 bond. His charges include fleeing from police, DUI, and theft of emergency equipment, among others. Tampa Fire Rescue highlighted the danger posed to the community and is reviewing security protocols to prevent future incidents.
