Florida proposes raising highway speed limits to 75 mph
A new bill in Florida may raise highway speed limits from 70 to 75 miles per hour. This change is expected to affect major highways like Interstate 95 and I-4, which are heavily used by travelers. State Senator Nick DiCeglie supports the bill, mentioning that 17 other states already have higher speed limits. However, he noted that if passed, the Florida Department of Transportation will first conduct a study before any changes take effect. While the bill has passed its initial committee meeting, not all drivers are in favor. John Navarra, a Daytona Beach resident, thinks the current limit is safe. Some motorcyclists worry that increasing the limit will encourage even faster driving on the roads. Despite concerns, DiCeglie reassures that safety will remain a top priority if the limit is raised. He argues that the change is needed and that discussions will continue as the bill progresses. In 2014, a similar speed limit increase was vetoed by former Governor Rick Scott over safety concerns. The new bill also proposes increasing speed limits on some rural highways and roads across the state.
