Florida voters reject abortion rights proposal as support falls short
Florida voters have rejected a proposal to restore abortion rights, falling short of the 60% support needed for passage. With 87% of votes counted, the measure received about 57% approval.
The amendment aimed to allow abortions until about 24 weeks, countering a strict law that bans the procedure after six weeks. This defeat marks a significant setback for efforts to expand abortion protections in the state.
Abortion rights measures were also on the ballot in other states, but Florida's high threshold for approval was unique. The outcome reflects ongoing challenges for abortion rights advocates following the U.S. Supreme Court's 2022 decision that overturned federal protections.
