Florida's Amendment 4 to protect abortion rights fails to pass
Florida's Amendment 4, which aimed to establish a constitutional right to abortion, failed to pass, receiving 58.4% support. It needed 60% to be approved. This outcome allows the state's six-week abortion ban to remain in effect. The amendment would have prohibited laws restricting abortion before fetal viability and aimed to protect women's health. Its defeat is seen as a win for Governor Ron DeSantis, who opposed the measure. Amendment 4 received more support than a similar initiative in Ohio last year, but Ohio's measure only required a simple majority to pass. Other ballot measures in Florida, including one for legalizing recreational marijuana, also did not succeed.
