Flynn Meyer leads Lincoln-Way Central soccer as goalkeeper
Flynn Meyer, a talented junior at Lincoln-Way Central, is making a name for herself as a goalkeeper in soccer. She has already achieved success in diving and gymnastics, qualifying for state competitions in both sports. Last fall, Meyer qualified for the state meet in diving. In winter, she took 18th place on the vault and helped her gymnastics team earn a third-place trophy at state. Now, she aims to continue her success on the soccer field this spring. Meyer describes her busy school year as "hectic." She enjoys competing so much that she feels awkward during short breaks. Her mindset motivates her teammates and coaches. Sean Fahey, the soccer coach, highlights her competitive nature, saying she consistently gives her best during practices. In her freshman year, Meyer started as goalkeeper for the Knights. The team had an impressive season, finishing with an 18-2-2 record. Last spring, the team had a tougher season but made it further in the playoffs. Despite the challenges, Meyer recorded ten shutouts and allowed only 15 goals that season. Now, with increased confidence, Meyer feels more comfortable in goal. She recalls being timid as a freshman but believes her experience has prepared her for this year. Key players on the team include Abby Sudkamp, an all-state defender, and Madi Watt, a forward committed to Eastern Illinois. Both Sudkamp and Watt trust Meyer’s abilities. They know the defense will support her by limiting shots on goal. Meyer, who thrives under pressure, feels ready for big moments. Her coach emphasizes that her past experiences have made her mentally tough, which is crucial for a goalie.
