Former Age of Empires developer critiques RTS genre stagnation and unveils Project Citadel
Dave Pottinger, a former developer of Age of Empires, claims the real-time strategy (RTS) genre has not evolved significantly in the last 20 years. He notes that many new games still follow the same basic formula established decades ago. Pottinger is now working on a new RTS called Project Citadel, which aims to innovate the genre. This game will feature a space-based roguelike format with procedural maps and a mix of turn-based and fast-paced gameplay. Project Citadel is set for early access release, where it will allow players to experience a fully playable campaign. The developers plan to expand content and gameplay based on community feedback during this phase.
