Bergey had been battling jaw cancer since 2021. Bergey was a key player for the Eagles, making five Pro Bowl appearances and serving as team MVP three times. He was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 2009 and recorded nearly 1,200 tackles during his career. After retiring in 1980, Bergey remained involved with the Eagles through radio broadcasts. He was also a plaintiff in a concussion-related lawsuit against the NFL.
