Former police officer murdered in Tirunelveli

A former police sub-inspector was killed in Tirunelveli on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. Zakhir Hussein Bijli, 64, was returning home on his motorcycle after morning prayers when an armed gang attacked him. The incident took place near kaatchi mandapam in Tirunelveli town. Police said Bijli had been hacked to death on the spot by four assailants. Bijli was known to be involved in legal disputes over a 36-cent land parcel in the area. He served as one of the administrators of Murtim Zarkhan Dargha. Authorities suspect that his ongoing legal battle may have led to the attack. Two suspects, identified as Karthik and Akbar, surrendered to the police later the same day. Both are from Tirunelveli and are now being investigated in connection with the murder.
