Former Syrian prisoners celebrate end of Assad regime and recall prison horrors
Former Syrian political prisoners are expressing joy over the recent fall of Bashar Al-Assad's regime, which ruled for 50 years. Omar Alshogre, a survivor of Sednaya prison, described the regime's collapse as a moment of unprecedented happiness for Syrians. Alshogre and Ahmad Helmi, another former prisoner, shared their experiences of torture and inhumane conditions in Syrian prisons. Helmi noted that the end of Assad's rule is a historic moment, allowing human rights organizations to return to Syria after years of restrictions. With reports that Assad and his family have fled to Russia, Alshogre expressed hope for justice and the restoration of democracy in Syria. He looks forward to returning home and reuniting with family, despite the destruction.
