Fossil hunting at Mazonia State Fish and Wildlife Area opened on March 1. Jay Damm found notable specimens, including a possible rare jellyfish and a classic fern. A biologist suggested the jellyfish might be the even rarer Reticulomedusa. Upcoming fishing events include talks on crappie and muskies from March 18-20. The early catch-and-release trout season starts on March 22 at nine sites across Illinois, including Rock Creek and Kankakee River State Park. Several outdoor events are scheduled from March 21-23, including the Illinois Deer Classic and the Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo. Hunter safety courses are also available in April at various locations.
