Foster mum laments boy’s permanent inability to communicate
A foster mother spoke in court about the devastating impact on her son, who was left blind and brain-damaged after an attack in 2019. The boy's foster mother shared her feelings while addressing Christopher Fulton and his wife Amanda, who were responsible for the injuries. The attack occurred in Mosside, County Antrim. During her emotional statement, the foster mother expressed that her son would never be able to share simple moments like saying "I love you." She described the love they have for him and the pain of his condition. She explained that he will miss out on many experiences, like seeing the sunrise or playing with his toys. She highlighted that the boy can only express distress through crying and other actions. He cannot communicate basic needs or enjoy typical childhood activities like riding a bike or celebrating Christmas. The foster mother lamented the loss of potential moments, such as graduating, getting a job, or starting a family, emphasizing his dependency on caregivers for everything. After a five-week trial, Christopher Fulton was found guilty of grievous bodily harm and child cruelty. Amanda Fulton was acquitted of some charges but convicted of allowing the child to suffer harm. The couple failed to seek medical help for the boy for three hours after the assault. Judge Peter Irvine has remanded them in custody and will announce their sentences on April 4.
