Fox Chapel hockey team prepares for Penguins Cup final
Ryan Loebig is thrilled to coach the Fox Chapel hockey team. He took over the program this season and had the chance to make adjustments rather than starting from scratch. The team will face Erie Cathedral Prep in the Penguins Cup final on Tuesday at UPMC Lemieux Complex. The Foxes have never won a Penguins Cup. “I jumped on a moving train,” Loebig said, expressing his relief that the players already had good chemistry. Since the new year, the team has been performing well, finishing with an impressive record of 18 wins and 3 losses. They scored 116 goals, leading their division. Fox Chapel's senior captain, Tyler Goldstein, mentioned that they play a fast and aggressive style to create turnovers. Cathedral Prep, the No. 2 seed, has had a strong playoff run. They have not allowed any goals in their two playoff games, with key player Tucker Kinnear leading the team with 20 goals and 14 assists this season. In their regular-season matchups, Fox Chapel defeated Cathedral Prep twice. Loebig acknowledges that it will be a tough game against a strong opponent. Last year, Fox Chapel made it to the Penguins Cup for the first time in 20 years but lost to Kiski. Goldstein emphasized the urgency of the match, comparing it to a Game 7 where the stakes are high. The Foxes have a powerful lineup with players like Dominic Casile and Tucker Cullen contributing many goals. This final offers them a chance to make history for their program. Goldstein believes they have the talent to win, and he’s eager to seize this opportunity.
