Fox River flows freely after Carpentersville dam removal
The Carpentersville dam has been removed, allowing the Fox River to flow freely. The $1.4 million project, which began in mid-September, has restored the river to its natural state, with a newly paved parking lot now available for visitors. During the demolition, workers discovered the original boulder dam beneath the concrete structure. Some mill stones were also found and may be included in an educational exhibit about the dam's history. Without the dam, the river may freeze in winter, which was unlikely before. Fishing will still be allowed, and officials will monitor changes to the river and its shoreline in the coming years.
