France delays first new nuclear reactor startup to 2038
France has delayed the startup date for its first new nuclear reactor to 2038, pushing it back by three years. The government has instructed Electricite de France SA to speed up plans for six new reactors and provide a cost and timeline assessment by year-end. The final investment decision for the reactors is expected next year. The construction costs have risen to nearly €80 billion, with the government planning to cover at least half through a subsidized loan. Additionally, France will support the development of small modular reactors and ensure uranium supply through its nuclear fuel company, Orano SA. A new storage pool for used fuel is planned by 2040.
