Fred Couples performs well at Hoag Classic despite illness

Fred Couples is battling an illness but continues to perform well at the Hoag Classic. The former Masters champion is preparing for his upcoming trip to Augusta National. Despite feeling sick after a practice session in the desert, he played impressively and shot a 67 in the first round at Newport Beach Country Club. He is just three shots behind the leader. Couples has competed in two events this year and finished in the top 15 both times. He is focusing on maximizing his distance off the tee as Augusta approaches. He stated, "I think getting out in the sun helped. I hit the ball solid." He has been practicing intensively and is excited to improve his performance. In addition to discussing his game, Couples provided an update on his friend Tiger Woods, who is recovering from an Achilles injury. Couples feels optimistic about Woods' recovery, saying, "He'll be fine." Currently, Brendan Jones is leading the Hoag Classic, but Couples is aiming for another Champions title. He expressed extra motivation since he lives nearby and loves the local golf course. He plans to be more aggressive in the next rounds to improve his putting.
