Freshman Lillyana Crawford excels as Kaneland's catcher

Freshman Lillyana Crawford is starting her varsity softball career as a catcher for Kaneland. Coach Mike Kuefler, a veteran coach with over 34 years of experience, believes she is already making an impact. He praises her growth after taking private lessons with him and feels comfortable putting her in various positions on the field. In her second game, Kaneland defeated Burlington Central 14-4. Crawford contributed significantly, getting three hits, including a two-run single. In the previous game, she caught during their 5-4 win over Hampshire, even though she did not get any hits. The team’s performance included multiple doubles, with standout performances from her teammates. Crawford also excelled defensively. She made impressive throws from her knees to catch runners trying to steal bases. Pitcher Ellie Peck appreciated her skills, emphasizing how exciting it is to work with a strong catcher. Kuefler noted her unique height advantage, which helps her in the game. Crawford has loved catching since she started playing softball at five years old. She ended up in the position because others did not want to catch, and she enjoys the challenges it brings. She proudly talks about the bruises she earns from the position, showcasing her dedication. The team's roster includes 12 girls, which means depth and versatility are crucial. Along with Crawford, other catchers are available, ensuring that the team remains strong at this key position.
