Fundraiser for Oakland teen raises over $40,000
A fundraiser for a 15-year-old boy who was shot and killed in Oakland has raised over $40,000. The boy, Derbing Jose Alvarado Gonzalez, was a student at Cristo Rey De La Salle High School. He was shot on Monday afternoon near the school and later died at the hospital. The fundraising page describes the incident as a “cruel act of violence” and urges the community to help his family during this difficult time. Many friends and family members have expressed their grief, highlighting Derbing's kindness and future ambitions. He loved soccer and wanted to become a police officer. According to police, Derbing was walking to soccer practice when two people approached him and asked for items from his backpack. Gunfire then broke out, fatally wounding him. Authorities have not identified any suspects or announced any arrests yet. Derbing's family visited the police on Wednesday and spoke about their loss. They said he was a great son and an example for his younger sister. School officials are providing support for students through counseling and other resources. In Derbing's honor, a community walk called the "Ceasefire Night Walk" is scheduled for Friday night. The event will start at St. Louis Bertrand Parish. This shooting marks the 22nd homicide investigated by Oakland police in 2025, compared to 16 at this time last year.
