Fundraiser unites Volusia County to support Michael Millett's family
This weekend, a fundraising event in Volusia County will honor 8-year-old Michael Millett, who was killed by two dogs. The tragedy has deeply affected the community. Many people, even those who did not know Michael, are coming together to support his family. The main event will be a charity motorcycle ride on Sunday. Riders will register at Sledz East Cycles in DeLand starting at 9 a.m. The ride will make five stops, where participants can join raffles and help raise money. Mary Shrader, the event organizer, was inspired to plan this after hearing Michael’s story. She believes the community will show strong support. Shrader wants to raise awareness about the responsibility of dog ownership, especially for dangerous breeds. She shared a personal connection, explaining that her husband was also attacked by dogs. “If you have vicious dogs, you need to protect others,” she said. Michael’s parents are also advocating for change. They were recently at the Statehouse to support a new bill aimed at improving dangerous dog laws. The proposed "Pam Rock Act" aims to create tougher penalties for owners of aggressive dogs. The bill has already passed a key subcommittee and requires further approval before going to the House. Shrader hopes the fundraiser will encourage more people to support this important legislation. She aims for safer communities for families and pets alike.
