Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu has requested Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to allocate funds for building groynes in three villages. These villages are located in the Radhapuram constituency, which is facing serious sea erosion. In a memorandum given to the Chief Minister, Appavu highlighted that his constituency consists of 13 coastal hamlets. It is home to over 10,000 fishermen who rely on country boats. The fishermen's homes and boats have been damaged by heavy tide during the erosion period, which lasts from May to January. The Tamil Nadu government has plans to construct groynes in Kooduthaazhai, Thomaiyarpuram, and Koottapuli to tackle this issue. The budget proposals for these projects were made for the financial year 2021-22. Projects to build groynes in Kooduthaazhai and Thomaiyarpuram are estimated at ₹40.70 crore and ₹31.20 crore, respectively. The project in Koottapuli has been completed, and Kooduthaazhai’s construction is underway with ₹15 crore already released. Appavu is urging the government to release an additional ₹25.70 crore to finish the work in Kooduthaazhai. He also wants funds allocated to start the Thomaiyarpuram project. Furthermore, he mentioned additional projects for groynes in Idinthakarai and Kooththankuzhi, seeking immediate funding from the government to support these fishermen.
