Gandhi's centenary celebrated in Thrissur with public meeting
A meeting was held in Thrissur to mark the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's first visit to the city. The event was organized by Sarvodaya workers. Therambil Ramakrishnan, a former Speaker, spoke about Gandhi’s vision of Sarvodaya, which means the welfare of all. He emphasized that following Gandhi's principles can help solve the world’s current crises. The conference included a call to create a memorial or plaque in the Manikandanal area. This location is significant because Gandhi addressed public meetings there three times. During the event, Sarvodaya books were given to 100 libraries in the district, and 100 meetings were held. At a separate public meeting organized by the District Congress Committee, actor Joy Mathew criticized the current leadership under Pinarayi Vijayan. He expressed concern that leaders do not engage with their people. Mathew noted that in earlier times, leaders like Oommen Chandy were more approachable. He also urged the new generation to remember Gandhi’s messages, which he felt have been forgotten. Poet Anwar Ali added that the country faces serious challenges, but Gandhi's ideals could light the way forward. The event included a reading of Gandhi's speech from 1925, reflecting on his enduring influence.
