Gary man charged with wife's July 2023 murder
A man from Gary is facing charges for the murder of his wife. Garry Moore, 65, has been accused of killing Tanya Moore, 55, on July 11, 2023. He is charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. Moore was arrested by U.S. Marshals on February 24 in Mobile, Alabama. He was brought back to Lake County and is now being held without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 21. On the morning of the incident, police arrived at their home and found Moore attempting to perform CPR on Tanya. A gun was found on the counter. Moore claimed they had been arguing about infidelity from 2017 while Tanya was in the process of moving out. He said she ran to grab a gun during the argument. Moore later stated that he had used a martial arts move to deflect the gun, which accidentally fired and struck Tanya in the chest. However, investigators have questioned Moore's account. The Lake County Coroner ruled the death a homicide and found no gunpowder residue on Tanya. There were also no drugs in her system. Additionally, police noted that Moore took over a minute to inform a 911 dispatcher that his wife had been shot. Evidence reveals inconsistencies in Moore's story. A firearms expert estimated he was 3-4 feet away when the gun went off. Moore stated he had fired the gun days earlier and claimed the gun was kept in a nightstand rather than an office. During further investigation, police found a second phone belonging to Moore at his martial arts studio. They did not find Tanya’s phone, and the office where he said she reached for the gun was cluttered, making it difficult for her to access a weapon. No DNA evidence connected either of them to the gun.
