Gates warns U.S. cannot cut global health funding
Bill Gates is urging the Trump administration to maintain funding for global health programs. He has been meeting with officials to emphasize the importance of U.S. support for initiatives like childhood vaccinations and HIV treatment. Gates stated that his foundation cannot fill the gaps if the U.S. reduces its contributions. Recently, Gates spoke with members of the National Security Council and lawmakers from both parties. He highlighted how crucial U.S. financial aid is for international health efforts. This follows President Trump's decision to significantly cut funding to the U.S. Agency for International Development, affecting various health programs. The Trump administration is currently reviewing which foreign aid projects to keep under its "America First" policy. Around 30 global health projects are being considered. Gates stressed that no foundation can replace the role of the U.S. government in these initiatives. His discussions included organizations like Gavi and the Global Fund, which receive substantial U.S. funding. The Global Fund and Gavi have not confirmed any funding changes. Meanwhile, several programs under PEPFAR, aimed at fighting AIDS, are also under review. Gates is advocating for continued U.S. support for the World Health Organization and efforts to eradicate polio. His foundation operates with an annual budget of over $8 billion and has been involved in global health discussions across different administrations.
