GCash and Silliman University to plant 1M mangroves

GCash has renewed its partnership with Silliman University to plant another 500,000 mangrove trees in South Negros. This initiative is part of their GForest program aimed at combating climate change and supporting local communities. In total, the project aims to plant one million mangroves in the region. The GForest initiative began in 2023 with the help of the United States International Agency for Development (USAID). The first phase focused on planting 500,000 mangroves in Negros Oriental. With growing community support and participation from local organizations, the second phase will take place in Negros Occidental. GCash, a leading financial technology platform in the Philippines, is committed to environmental restoration. The company collaborates with Silliman University, known for its research in marine science, to ensure the project is successful. Silliman University will manage research, provide expertise, and work with local communities to oversee planting and nurturing the trees. Mangroves are important for both the environment and the economy. They help fight climate change, protect coastlines, and support local fisheries. Healthy mangrove ecosystems contribute to food security and reduce damage from natural disasters like typhoons. Besides environmental benefits, this initiative aims to improve livelihoods for people living in coastal areas. Users earn rewards for their engagement in the program. The project not only aims to restore ecosystems but also to create sustainable income opportunities for local farmers and fisherfolk. GCash intends to scale up the initiative to enhance eco-tourism and strengthen local economies. The planting of one million trees is expected to start yielding results by 2029, benefiting both the environment and the community.
