Georgia man indicted for kidnapping linked to crypto theft
A man from Georgia has been indicted for allegedly helping plan a violent carjacking and kidnapping in Connecticut. The incident happened in August and is believed to be linked to a theft of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency. James Schwab, 22, from Peachtree Corners, faces one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping. This charge could result in a life sentence if he is convicted. Schwab was arrested on January 29 when he returned to the U.S. from Bali and has been in custody since then. Federal authorities report that Schwab helped organize the kidnapping of the parents of a person suspected of being involved in a large crypto theft. He reportedly had a confrontation with the victims' son at a nightclub in Miami in July 2024. The kidnapping occurred on August 25. Witnesses called 911 to report that several men had attacked someone and forced him into a white van. Police spotted the van shortly after and started to chase it. The driver crashed a mile away, and four men ran from the vehicle but were quickly caught. Two other suspects were later arrested at a rental home. Inside the van, police found a man and a woman who were bound with duct tape. The man had been beaten severely and was in need of medical care. The victims said they were taken from their Lamborghini after being rear-ended by another car. Officials stated that Schwab had regular communication with the kidnappers before the crime. He is accused of financially supporting the conspiracy and arranging travel for the kidnappers. Five of the six Florida residents charged in the case have already pleaded guilty and are waiting for sentencing.
