Laian, a popular restaurant in Geraldton, has closed due to head chef Nadeem Turkia's stage four lymphoma diagnosis. The restaurant had its last service on January 19, leaving staff and the community saddened. Laian opened in mid-2022 and quickly gained recognition for its Middle Eastern menu, earning a spot in the top 100 restaurants in the 2023 Western Australia Good Food Guide. Nadeem's departure for treatment in Darwin made it difficult for the team to continue operations. Despite efforts to keep the restaurant running, economic pressures and the need for additional staff led to the closure. Nadeem expressed gratitude for the memories created at Laian and hopes to return in the future.
