German startup advances fusion energy with new laser technology
Focused Energy, a fusion power startup, has secured two powerful lasers from Amplitude to advance its nuclear fusion research. This acquisition aims to support the development of a fusion pilot plant that could provide clean energy. The new kilo-joule class lasers will enhance Focused Energy's inertial confinement fusion process, which uses lasers to compress fuel pellets and trigger fusion reactions. These lasers can fire every 60 seconds, facilitating rapid experimentation. Focused Energy is also building a new research facility in the San Francisco Bay Area, expected to open in two years. This facility will focus on optimizing fusion technology, contributing to the broader goal of achieving commercially viable fusion energy.
