Germany's AfD party kicks off election season with convention and protests
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is holding a two-day convention in Riesa, Saxony, to nominate co-leader Alice Weidel as its chancellor candidate and finalize its platform. This event marks the start of the election season ahead of the February 23 election. Protests accompanied the AfD gathering, with thousands of demonstrators expected. Police managed the situation, breaking up a sit-in blockade and responding to fireworks thrown at officers during the protests. Current polls show AfD in second place with about 20% support, while the conservative Union bloc leads with around 30%. Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats are trailing at 14-17%. The election is now set for seven months earlier than planned.
