Ghana begins ballot counting in closely contested presidential election
Ghana began counting ballots on Saturday after a closely contested presidential election. Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia faced former President John Mahama amid public discontent over the economy, which has struggled with high inflation and a recent debt default. Voting was generally peaceful, though police reported two fatalities in separate incidents. Voters were selecting a successor to President Nana Akufo-Addo, who is stepping down after two terms, and also electing a new parliament. Results started coming in after polls closed at 1700 GMT. Preliminary presidential results are expected later on Sunday, with full results anticipated by Tuesday.
