Giants' pitchers showcase impressive 2.16 ERA this spring
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The San Francisco Giants' pitchers, Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and Justin Verlander, are having a strong spring training. The trio has an impressive earned run average (ERA) of 2.16 over 50 innings. They have combined for 56 strikeouts during this period. On Tuesday night, Ray performed well by allowing just one run against the San Diego Padres. His performance came a day after Verlander pitched five scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox. Ray expressed excitement about their successes and the opportunity to learn from each other. Each pitcher is also focusing on improving their skills. Webb, the Giants' Opening Day starter, is working on his cutter and changeup. Verlander is refining his curveball, while Ray is adjusting his changeup, a pitch he has recently learned with guidance from 2024 AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal. Ray's improved changeup is a highlight of his spring. He is working closely with Skubal and looks forward to facing his former teammate when the Giants play against the Detroit Tigers soon. Ray jokingly mentioned that he would give a thumbs-up to Skubal's dugout if he throws his changeup during the game. After recovering from Tommy John surgery, Ray feels revitalized and ready for his first full season since 2022. He mentioned the importance of having a normal offseason and spring training. Manager Bob Melvin noted that Ray appears healthier this year compared to previous seasons. In other news, infielder Casey Schmitt was unable to play due to back tightness, while Matt Chapman had his second multi-error game of spring training. Chapman, a five-time Gold Glove winner, had only two multi-error games throughout last season.
