Glaciers critical for water systems, experts warn
On Saturday, the Institution of Engineers (India) in Prayagraj, along with the Indian Water Works Association, marked World Water Day. The event focused on the theme of "Preservation of Glaciers," as designated by the United Nations. A seminar was held at Engineers Bhawan to discuss glacial preservation and the impact of climate change on water availability. Prof Avanish Kumar Dubey, chairman of the IEI Prayagraj local center, highlighted the importance of water conservation. He noted that while over 70% of Earth’s water exists, less than 1% is usable for human needs. He emphasized that our lifestyles and lack of understanding of natural resources hinder water preservation. Padma Shri Ajai Kumar Sonkar, the event's chief guest, spoke on the crucial role glaciers play in global water systems and climate regulation. He warned that global warming is speeding up the melting of glaciers, which threatens these essential processes. Sonkar called for immediate actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions, manage water sustainably, and use advanced technology to track glacial changes. Prof HK Pandey from MNNIT Allahabad added that preserving glaciers is becoming harder due to rising global temperatures. He stressed that urgent efforts are needed to protect these vital resources for biodiversity, freshwater supply, and environmental stability.
