Global carbon emissions rise by 330 million tons in 2024 as heat records continue
Global carbon emissions are set to rise by 330 million tons this year, reaching 41.2 billion tons, according to the Global Carbon Project. This marks a 0.8% increase from 2023, although it is less than last year's 1.4% rise. China remains the largest emitter, with a 0.2% increase in emissions, while India's emissions surged by 4.6%. In contrast, the United States and the European Union saw reductions of 0.6% and 3.8%, respectively. Despite some declines, overall emissions continue to rise, driven mainly by developing countries. Scientists emphasize the need for significant cuts to meet climate goals, as the world approaches critical temperature thresholds.
