Global coal consumption rises despite Britain's closure of last coal plant
Britain recently closed its last coal-fired power plant, marking a significant shift in its energy landscape. However, globally, coal remains a major energy source, providing about one-third of the world's electricity, especially in developing countries. Despite efforts to reduce coal use, worldwide consumption increased by 4.5% last year, reaching record levels. Many countries, including South Africa, Indonesia, and Vietnam, are struggling to transition to cleaner energy while managing economic impacts and job losses in coal-dependent regions. While some coal plants are being retired, challenges remain. Financial support for transitioning to renewables is often insufficient, and political interests can hinder progress. Effective solutions require substantial investments in energy infrastructure and support for affected communities.
