Global freshwater resources decline by 290 cubic miles since 2015, study finds
A new study reveals a significant global loss of freshwater resources, totaling 290 cubic miles since 2015, equivalent to 250% of Lake Erie’s volume. This decline is linked to climate change and has not been replenished despite cooler temperatures. The study highlights that the years following 2015 have been among the warmest on record, contributing to increased evaporation and reduced rainfall. This has led to persistent drought conditions across various regions, worsening the depletion of lakes, rivers, and aquifers. The research utilized data from GRACE satellites, which measure changes in the Earth's gravity field to track water loss. Experts indicate that the current trend of declining freshwater resources is concerning, with no signs of recovery in sight.
