Global meeting in Geneva addresses skin NTDs integration
The 2nd Global Meeting on skin-related neglected tropical diseases (skin NTDs) starts today in Geneva. The goal is to speed up progress in treating these diseases, which primarily affect marginalized communities around the world. More than 1,000 experts are attending the three-day meeting. They include researchers, public health advocates, and policymakers. Participants will discuss new strategies for the prevention and treatment of skin NTDs, which cause serious disabilities and social stigma for millions. Dr. Ibrahima Socé Fall from the WHO emphasizes that integration is crucial for meeting the goals set out in the 2030 NTD road map. He believes this gathering will spark innovative solutions for early detection and care for affected individuals. This year, discussions will also focus on using artificial intelligence and digital tools to improve health services, especially in areas with limited resources. The meeting aims to unite health officials, researchers, NGOs, and community representatives to share effective practices. Professor Henry Lim, President of the International League of Dermatological Societies, points out that skin diseases are often overlooked but significantly affect people’s lives. He calls for collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure everyone has access to proper diagnosis and treatment. The meeting follows a recent recommendation by the WHO for a resolution on skin diseases. This resolution is set to be discussed at the upcoming World Health Assembly in May.
