Global plastic pollution conference ends with major disagreements among nations

The fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) on plastic pollution ended with significant disagreements among 175 nations. Key issues included whether to address the entire lifecycle of plastics and the need for financial support from developed countries to assist developing nations. India proposed a dedicated multilateral fund to help developing countries tackle plastic pollution. The country emphasized the importance of balancing environmental protection with sustainable development, while also seeking clarity on the treaty's scope and the inclusion of specific articles. The Chair’s Proposal introduced new targets and definitions but left out some critical elements. India expressed concerns about the lack of consensus and the need for further negotiations to ensure all member states' views are considered.
