Gold pocket watch awarded to Titanic rescuer sells for nearly $2 million
A gold pocket watch awarded to Captain Arthur Rostron, who rescued 700 Titanic survivors, sold for nearly $2 million at auction, setting a new record for Titanic memorabilia. The watch was given by three women survivors in gratitude for his actions. The 18-carat Tiffany & Co. watch was sold by Henry Aldridge and Son to a private collector in the U.S. The previous record for Titanic memorabilia was held by a pocket watch belonging to John Jacob Astor, which sold for about $1.5 million in April. Rostron's crew saved over 700 passengers after the Titanic sank in 1912. The watch features an inscription thanking him for his bravery.
