Goodlander demands information on detained Nashua man
A U.S. Congress member from New Hampshire is urging immigration officials to provide details about a German man from Nashua who was detained earlier this month. Representative Maggie Goodlander is focused on Fabian Schmidt, a 34-year-old green card holder, who was taken into custody at Boston Logan International Airport on March 7. Schmidt's family states he has lived in the United States since he was a teenager. They claim he was subjected to violent treatment during his detention. However, U.S. Customs and Border Protection denied these allegations, stating that appropriate procedures are followed when someone with drug-related charges tries to reenter the country. Court records from California indicate that Schmidt has faced several misdemeanor charges, including drug possession in 2015 and driving under the influence in 2016. Goodlander emphasized that Schmidt deserves an immigration hearing and expressed concern about the reports regarding his case. She mentioned staying in close contact with his family and is working to gather more information to provide support. It remains uncertain when or if Schmidt will receive a hearing. News 9 has attempted to contact his lawyers but has not received any response.
