Google Assistant replaced by Gemini in 2025
Google is ending the use of its popular digital assistant, Google Assistant, later this year. The company plans to replace it with a new AI assistant called Gemini. This change will happen in the coming months for most users. Google Assistant has been a key part of Android devices, just as Siri is for Apple. However, Google has decided to move towards Gemini, which is a generative AI tool. This means it can not only assist with tasks but also improve over time with new AI updates. As Google rolls out Gemini, it will no longer support Google Assistant on devices or allow new downloads from app stores. This includes iPhones, meaning users will not be able to download Google Assistant anymore. The shift to Gemini is not totally unexpected. Google had hinted at this change for some time. The company started allowing users to switch from Google Assistant to Gemini, even before Gemini had all the features of an assistant. Gemini now includes features that Google Assistant offered, like setting timers and playing music. Additionally, it has advanced capabilities, such as answering questions about what's in front of you through your camera. While Gemini is being promoted as the better option, there are still challenges. Some users have reported that it struggles with basic tasks, such as opening apps or setting reminders. Only devices that do not meet the requirements for Gemini, such as those with less than 2GB of RAM, will still have access to Google Assistant in 2026. For everyone else, it's time to adapt to the new AI assistant.
