Google Gemini gathers more user data than competitors

A recent report from SurfShark, a virtual private network provider, states that Google Gemini collects more data than other AI chatbots. It gathers 22 out of 35 possible data types. These include precise location data, which only Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity collect. The report highlights that Gemini also collects a large amount of additional information. This includes contact details, user content, search history, and browsing history. Concerns about data collection come amid worries about the Chinese AI bot DeepSeek. DeepSeek is said to collect data that might be accessed by the Chinese government, but it ranks fifth among popular chatbots based on data collection, gathering only 11 unique types of data. SurfShark cautions users to be careful about their data security while using AI chatbots. A report from Hacker News noted that DeepSeek had a data breach. This leak affected over 1 million records, including API keys and chat history. Tomas Stamulis, Surfshark's Chief Security Officer, advises users to disable chat history and check their privacy settings. People should also think carefully before sharing sensitive information with AI chatbots. SurfShark's study analyzed the privacy details of popular AI chatbots available on the Apple App Store.
