Google Maps introduces chat feature with Gemini integration
Google Maps has introduced a new feature allowing users to chat with Gemini for information about places. When you open a location's information card in Maps, you will see an “ask about place” button. This lets you easily ask questions and get answers about the location. With this feature, you can inquire about the best route to a coffee shop or ask for opening and closing times. Gemini provides these answers in clear language, with clickable links for more details. Users can also ask about nearby restaurants or libraries. The goal is to make finding information simpler and quicker without switching between Maps and Google Search. However, the new integration has some issues. Sometimes, Gemini does not summarize public reviews correctly. It has also made mistakes in interpreting questions, such as misreporting menu items. While the feature seems promising, it needs further improvements. The rollout is ongoing, but it is unclear when it will be available for all users. Some are testing it with advanced subscriptions, but details for non-subscribers remain unknown.
