Google's Gemini AI surpasses ChatGPT in benchmarks
After OpenAI launched ChatGPT, Google realized it needed a quick response. The company set a goal for its AI team to create a competitor within 100 days. Sissie Hsiao, the head of Google’s AI project, described the challenge as “like sprinting a marathon.” Google’s AI chatbot, initially named Bard, was introduced in February 2023. This was after ChatGPT had already made a significant impact. However, the launch did not go smoothly due to an advertising error that showcased incorrect information. Later, in December, Google rebranded the chatbot as Gemini, which performed better than ChatGPT in many tests. Despite these setbacks, Gemini continued to be developed. In February, the chatbot encountered another issue when its image generator produced historically inaccurate pictures. Hsiao then allowed the team more time to correct these problems, and the feature was successfully relaunched in August. Despite the challenges, Google believes it is keeping pace with competitors. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet, expressed confidence in their AI advancements. He stated that Google plans to invest $75 billion this year to further enhance its AI capabilities. Looking ahead, Hsiao emphasized that Google views AI as essential for business operations. Gemini is expected to offer personalized services by remembering user preferences and integrating with other Google apps. Hsiao confirmed Google remains committed to being an AI-first company, stressing the importance of embracing AI to remain competitive in the market.
