GOP introduces stopgap bill; Democrats plan to block
House Republican leaders have introduced a stopgap funding bill to keep the government running at current levels until the end of September. The bill includes a $6 billion increase in defense spending but cuts non-defense spending by $13 billion. Democrats plan to block the bill, citing significant cuts to healthcare and other critical services. The proposal also includes a $20 billion cut to IRS enforcement and increased funding for immigration enforcement. Speaker Mike Johnson aims to hold a House vote on the bill Tuesday, but passing it will be difficult without Democratic support. Republicans have a slim majority and can only afford one defection.
