Gophers Steveson, McEnelly advance to NCAA semifinals

Gophers wrestlers Gable Steveson and Max McEnelly have moved on to the semifinals at the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia. Steveson, a heavyweight and top seed, won his quarterfinal match against Cohlton Schultz from Arizona State. He won by technical fall with a score of 20-5. This victory is Steveson's 69th in a row, making his career record 102 wins and 2 losses. McEnelly, who competes at 184 pounds and is the No. 3 seed, also won his quarterfinal match. He defeated Chris Foca from Cornell with a score of 10-7. McEnelly will face second-seeded Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa in the semifinals. In the 141-pound match, Vance VomBaur from the Gophers lost to Jesse Mendez of Ohio State, ending his run in the quarterfinals. He will still compete in the consolation round against Rutgers' Joseph Olivieri. Tommy Askey continues in the 157-pound bracket after winning two consolation matches. However, four other Gophers were eliminated from the tournament on Friday. Cooper Flynn and Tyler Wells both won a consolation match but lost later on. Andrew Sparks and Clayton Whiting were both eliminated in the second round of consolation matches. After the early session on Friday, the Gophers were in sixth place with 35 points, while Penn State is leading with 90.5 points.
