Government refunds 12.55 lakh for faulty toll charges
The government has issued 12.55 lakh refunds for wrong toll charges in 2024. This accounts for only 0.03% of all FASTag transactions. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari shared these details in a response to the Lok Sabha. He noted that more than Rs 2 crore in penalties were placed on toll agencies responsible for these mistakes. The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) confirmed the refunds were made due to incorrect deductions. Errors occur when toll agencies mistakenly enter vehicle registration numbers or when FASTag readers give multiple readings. If an agency is found at fault, they could face a fine of 30 to 50 times the excess fee charged. Gadkari also mentioned plans for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to use AI for monitoring tolls more effectively. Additionally, audit cameras may be installed at major toll plazas to ensure proper fee collection. The government aims to improve infrastructure with planned Wayside Amenities (WSAs) every 40-60 km on highways. So far, 393 WSAs have been awarded, with 94 already operational. In terms of electric vehicles, as of March 17, 2025, there are 26,367 public EV charging stations in India. This includes over 10,000 stations installed during the 2024-25 fiscal year. Overall, the government continues to develop and manage projects to enhance the road transport system across the country.
