Government to conduct independent review of Baldota plant
The State government is considering an independent review of the Baldota Integrated Steel Plant project in Koppal district due to ongoing protests. Residents are concerned about potential pollution and environmental impacts. Industries Minister M.B. Patil announced that a committee may be formed to assess the project's effects. He suggested involving the Indian Institute of Science or another independent organization for this evaluation. Patil said the government would make a decision based on the findings. He plans to meet with local representatives, activists, and community leaders after the current legislative session. This meeting aims to ensure transparency in the decision-making process. The proposed steel plant has a total investment of ₹17,979 crore and is designed to produce 3.5 million tonnes annually. Opponents of the plant argue that it could worsen pollution, especially since over 20 sponge iron plants in the area are already causing environmental damage. Last week, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered construction to stop until a decision is reached. The company involved has voiced its support for the project, but Patil emphasized that the final decision will not rely solely on their input. He confirmed that an expert committee, which should include elected representatives, will undertake the evaluation.
