GPT-4o Copilot now available for Visual Studio Code
GitHub has launched the GPT-4o Copilot for Visual Studio Code (VS Code) users. This new AI model is designed to provide better code suggestions to developers. It is trained on data from over 275,000 public code repositories and supports more than 30 programming languages. The announcement was shared in a blog post on GitHub. The GPT-4o Copilot is faster and more efficient than previous versions. It aims to enhance developer productivity by offering more accurate code completions based on context. Users can easily integrate the new model into their VS Code environment. They can do this through the Copilot menu in the title bar or by using the Command Palette. For Copilot Business and Enterprise users, administrators need to enable specific settings to grant access to the new model. Free users will have their usage counted toward a monthly limit of 2,000 completions. Additionally, the GPT-4o Copilot will soon be available in JetBrains Integrated Development Environments (IDEs). Users there can select the model from a settings menu. Johan Sanneblad, CEO of ToeknTek, commented on the launch, noting that GitHub Copilot is catching up to other IDEs like Cursor. He believes Copilot needs some additional features to compete fully. He specifically mentioned improvements in code merging and performance. GitHub Copilot has also introduced Next Edit Suggestions, which can propose logical changes as developers write code. This feature can help speed up the editing process. Users are encouraged to provide feedback on the new model to help improve its functionality. Importantly, changing the AI model does not affect the Copilot Chat feature or its data usage policies.
