Grand Canyon hires Winston Gandy as new head coach
Grand Canyon University has appointed Winston Gandy as its new head coach for the women's basketball team. Gandy comes from South Carolina, where he was an assistant coach. He takes over following the departure of Molly Miller, who has moved to Arizona State after a successful tenure at Grand Canyon. Gandy was introduced at a press conference on Monday. Afterward, he returned to South Carolina to support the Gamecocks as they defend their national title. Miller had an impressive record of 117 wins and 38 losses during her five seasons at Grand Canyon, leading the team to the NCAA Tournament this year. In his statement, Gandy expressed excitement about his new role. “I’m beyond honored and absolutely thrilled,” he said. Gandy has previously coached at Duke and has experience in recruiting and player development. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley praised Gandy for his work ethic and dedication to players. Gandy is stepping into a strong program that recently concluded a season with 32 wins and only 3 losses. The Lopes had an outstanding streak of 30 consecutive victories before losing in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
