Grand Rapids plans $20M golf entertainment center

Grand Rapids is looking into building a golf entertainment complex at the Indian Trails Golf Course. This facility would include indoor and outdoor hitting bays, simulators, and a restaurant, allowing people to play golf year-round. The proposed project could cost up to $20 million and be finished by 2028. David Marquardt, the city's parks and recreation director, presented this plan to city commissioners on March 25. He explained that the complex would have comfortable hitting bays and offer simulated games for year-round use. There are also plans for a restaurant and bar to serve food and drinks. The rental prices for the hitting bays could range from $17 to $65 per hour. Currently, other similar facilities in the area charge between $35 and $65 per hour. The golf course also plans to raise its average round price slightly, from $28.13 to about $29.55. Marquardt believes the new center could attract 135,000 visitors each year, benefiting the local economy by an estimated $126 million over ten years. However, the current facilities at Indian Trails need between $4 million and $10 million in upgrades, as they are outdated. Since 2020, the golf course has seen significant growth, with a 78% increase in rounds played and a 213% increase in revenue. In 2025, it is expected to generate $1.3 million from approximately 40,362 rounds of golf. Commissioners are considering two main options: a $4-$10 million plan for immediate maintenance or the larger $20 million golf entertainment facility. Some expressed concerns about costs, particularly with economic uncertainty ahead. But many commissioners support the idea, believing it could lead to economic growth and increased visitors to the area.
