Fights broke out in downtown Grand Rapids over the weekend, leading police to use pepper spray to control the situation. Five people were arrested on various charges, including disorderly conduct and assault. The incidents occurred early Saturday morning, March 15, as large crowds gathered near Commerce Avenue and Oakes Street. The police were already present due to a sold-out show at a nearby venue, with around 400 people in the area. At about 2:25 a.m., a significant fight began, prompting officers to call for backup. According to Police Chief Eric Winstrom, the fights were fueled by warm weather and alcohol. Officers issued verbal warnings before using pepper spray and pepper balls to disperse the crowds. The pepper balls create dust clouds and are designed not to harm anyone. However, some individuals refused to leave and continued to provoke the officers. Winstrom stated that he reviewed body camera footage and found no evidence of misconduct by officers. He praised their restraint, noting that the situation could have escalated into further violence. Approximately 20 officers were involved in bringing the chaos under control within eight minutes. The police chief emphasized the importance of building trust between the community and law enforcement. He believes that the recent events demonstrate an improved relationship, especially compared to past incidents that have strained community relations.
